Old vs. New Money

Old vs. New money describe the two different kinds of upper class people. Old money are people who have always had money and lived in the upper class most or all of their lives. They tend to be more selfish because they don't know what it's like to have to earn money.Daisy and Tom Buchanan resemble the group "old money", Daisy is always consumed in the materialistic things like when she hits myrtle she doesn't stop to see if she's okay, she is only worried about the consequences. These people associated in the "old money" group are selfish, shallow, and lack values. Jordan Baker is a perfect example of this in the book, she is consumed with herself, she makes a comment saying people should be careful of her when shes driving.

The "New Money" group of people are ones who came into a lot of money or worked hard for their money in a short amount of time. Gatsby is an example of this by how got his money from inheriting some and some from his business deals. Although we find out later in the book that Gatsby got his money from bootlegging he still has values. None the Less The people of West Egg have more values out of the two groups but still are greedy, superficial, and spend excessively. Even though the two have some difference they still have the same thing in common the love for money.

The Great Gatsby Film Versions

the 1974 great gatsby film was directed by jack clayton. The movie is a great remake o the original novel. The film stars Robert Redford as Gatsby & Mia Farrow as Daisy. The film won Oscars in 1975 for best costume design and best original musical score. People felt the film didn't have much emotional depth because the book it was based off of was so great.

Another version of this movie/book was on A&E Television Network. This version stars Toby Stephens as Gatsby and Mira Sorvino as Daisy. This movie version is almost exactly the same as the other one, but this one is newer and was made in 2000. This movie was very entertaining.

The Green Light

"You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock."
-pg 92

In the Great Gatsby "The Green Light" symbolizes Green for hope and for Gatsby's hope to meet with daisy once again. It is one of the most important symbols in the Novel. Gatsby has always longed to be with Daisy again. "Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished foreer. Compare to the great distance tht had seperated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock" (Pg 93) In this quote from the novel it explains how Gatsby finally gets to meet with Daisy again after all those years. He would stare off accross the bay staring at the green light hoping for her to see her again and he finally got too.

F. Scott Fitzgerald.

F. Scott had a rough life with troublesome love, but he wrote great books because of this.

He wrote many books such as The Great Gatsby. (This book was his most popular.). Another great book he wrote was This Side of Paradise. These two books refer to his own life especially This Side of Paradise.. Amory Blaine the protagonist of the book and it he was based on this character.

F. Scott's full name is Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896. In June 1918 Fitzgerald was assigned to Camp Sheridan, near Montgomery, Alabama. There he fell in love with an eighteen-year-old named Zelda Sayre, (in the book she played Daisy.) the youngest daughter of an Alabama Supreme Court judge. The romance intensified Fitzgeralds hopes for the success of his novel, but he was shot down. The war ended just before he was to be sent overseas... after his discharge in 1919 he went to New York City to get his fortune in order to marry. Unwilling to wait while Fitzgerald succeeded in the advertisement business and unwilling to live on his small salary, Zelda Sayre broke their engagement.

Prohibition

1919 Prohibition was ratified in the U.S., banning manufacturing, export, import, transportation and selling of alcohol. On January 16, 1920 is when Prohibition went into affect. The goal of prohibition was to reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poor houses and improve health and hygiene in America. Instead, it made conditions in America worse, alcohol became or dangerous to consume and Gang Violence arose, corruption of police and public officials occurred.

Even though the sale of alcohol was illegal the consumption wasn't, "Speakeasies" were established which were underground Bars were many people would go illegally and drink alcohol. Large Quantities were smuggled from other countries such as Canada. Many people didn't believe that alcohol should be banned and that they had the right to choose if they wanted to drink or not. Another popular thing during this time was Illegal Brewing at home, many people made their own wine and hard cider.

Not only were the Citizens breaking the rules but also the government and even the President. President Harding later admitted to having the white house stocked with Bootleg liqueur. This lead to widespread contempt for authority.
Finally in 1933 the states ratified the Twenty First Ammendment which appelead Ammendment XVIII, allowing Prohibition to be over.

1920's

The 20's era was a era of great invention..
one invention that had a major impact on lives was the radio. The radio allowed americans to listen to news, music, and comedy shows. Another invention of the 20's was an insulin shot for diabetics and penicillin, this decade made some major breakthroughs with medicine and science.

One of the biggest problems in the 1920's was the prohibition. This was a ban on alcoholic drinks. This ended up causing many gangs and mafias.. it also didn't stop people from drinking it just made them do it behind closed doors called speakeasies.

flappers also

Dancing was a major part of the 20's. The charleston was the most popular dance and at Gatsby's parties that was the dance everyone knew.

The Roaring 20's was a time of prohibition, flappers, music, & dancing. Dances that were most popular in the 20's were the charleston, fox-trot, and shimmy.

JEALOUSY

Jealousy is an emotion that refers to negative feelings or thoughts of insecurities, fear, and anxiety over an inticipated loss of something that one values such as relationship, friendship, or love. Jealousy consists of emotions such as arnger, sadness, and disgust. This book has a lot of interesting view points of jealousy. Such as:

"Myrtle Wilson's face it seemed purposeless and inexplcable until i relized her eyes wide with jealous terror, were fixed not on Tom but on Jordan Baker whom she took to be his wife." (page 131)

The Great Gatsby has a great deal of jealousy. When Tom got a phone call from Myrtle Wilson, Daisy felt really jealous and wanted to listen to what he was saying to her. Another thing that happens to show Daisy's jealousy is when she kills Mytle by running her over and no caring at all.

Flapper Girls!

When anyone mentions the 1920's what comes to your mind? Would it be: prohibition? the stock market crashing? jazz music? The thing that always comes to my mind first is Flapper Girls. During the Roaring twenties, flapper girls changed the way many woman thought. They stood for individuality, freedom, rebellion. They believed choice was a God given right not a privilege. They believed they had the choice to choose their own job, sexuality, clothes, hair style, etc.

Flapper Girls are described as young woman around the age 19 who defied traditional ideas such as proper dress and behavior. They shocked society by raising their dresses, cutting off their hair, wearing makeup, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and going dancing in night clubs.

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald has extravagant parties where people who weren't even invited came. This is an example of how during this time in the 1920's when not only flappers but many others went out to party and realized they could change the normal standards that people had of how they should live their life.

"There was dancing now on the canvas in the garden; old men pushing young girls backward in eternal graceless circles, superior couples holding each other tortuously, fashionably, and keeping in the corners- a great number of single girls dancing individualistically or relieving the orchestra for a moment of the burden of the banjo or the traps" -The Great Gatsby pg 46

"The playful Flapper here we see,

The fairest of the fair.

She's not what Grandma used to be,-

Her girlish ways may make a stir,

Her manners cause a scene,

But there is no more harm in her

Than a submarine."

Unrequited Love

Unrequited love is a very difficult thing to deal with. It is full of sadness and agony between two people. It's when one person in a relationship isn't fully aware of the others feelings for the other one. This reminds me of Tom and Daisy's relationship because Tom id cheating on Daisy and Daisy still wants to keep Tom around because she doesn't want her life to change. Tom used Myrtle wilson, Mr. George Wilson's wife for sex; Daisy knew about all of this but didn't say a thing. She later thought she liked Jay Gatsby, but Tom used the word "bootlegger" which made Daisy change her mind about him.

"Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table... They weren't happy... yet they weren't unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald,
The Great Gatsby, Ch. 7

In the cold change which time hath wrought on love
(The snowy winter of his summer prime),
Should a chance sigh or sudden tear-drop move
Thy heart to memory of the olden time;
Turn not to gaze on me with pitying eyes,
Nor mock me with a withered hope renewed;
But from the bower we both have loved, arise
And leave me to my barren solitude!

What boots it that a momentary flame
Shoots from the ashes of a dying fire?
We gaze upon the hearth from whence it came,
And know the exhausted embers must expire:
Therefore no pity, or my heart will break;
Be cold, be careless--for thy past love's sake!

Selfish People

Everyone is are bound to be selfish at one point or another in their life. It starts out when your little, say you have a new toy that you love but don't want to share with any of the other kids in your class and they say your being selfish. Little kids are usually selfish it's all about them and what they want and that they things they own are theres. They haven't been taught that in life you should be generous and share things with people.

Little kids aren't the only ones who are selfish but even adults, people are greedy and think it's all about them not everyone learns the lesson of sharing. They are the kind of people who only care about themselves and will do what they need to get by in life. We need to learn in life not to be selfish but to think about others and share what we have.

"False Riches, consiting of money, houses and lands, acquired by selfish means at costs to others and thereafter used selfishly, are almost always used for the oppression of others" -Joesph Franklin Rutherford
